Farmmax- A Holistic Approach to Strengthening the Onion Value Chain in India
Farmmax- A Holistic Approach to Strengthening the Onion Value Chain in India
Context and Rationale
India, often called the “world’s onion basket,” faces recurring crises of onion price volatility. These are not solely due to production shortfalls, but are compounded by seasonal price fluctuations, the vulnerability of the Rabi crop, supply-demand mismatches, inadequate storage facilities, policy inconsistencies, and evolving consumer behavior. Despite repeated policy actions like export bans and minimum export price adjustments, systemic issues remain unresolved.
SAS and Manavlok together have created a self sustaining program to strengthen this Onion Value Chain. This has been developed of detailed research on the ground meetings, visits to farmers, associations, storage facilities and discussions with their entire value chain to understand the on ground situations and issues.
This then becomes the basis to develop and address, streamline the process and create relevant structures which will strengthen the value chain all the way up. Out of this whole activity has “Farmmax Program” been generated. The Farmmax Program emerges as a structured, long-term solution aimed at stabilizing the onion value chain through a farmer-led, full-cycle approach that addresses these foundational challenges. Farmmax is a four-year program implemented through the Farmmax Agro Producer Company with the goal of transforming onion farming into a sustainable, dignified livelihood. By the end of the program, it envisions building a base of at least 1,200 active farmer-shareholders, making the initiative community-owned and self-sustaining.
The Farmmax strategy is built on seven core components, each contributing to a robust and scalable onion ecosystem:
- Farmer Knowledge and Practices- Central to Farmmax is capacity building through thematic farm schools focused on soil testing, soybean crop management, nursery development for Kharif and Rabi onion, fertilizer application, pesticide usage, seed treatment, onion seed production, storage techniques, and processing technologies. These sessions are designed to shift traditional farming practices toward informed, scientific decision-making, thereby enhancing productivity and reducing dependency on unverified information.
- Market Orientation and Value Chain Integration- Farmmax aims to build stronger farmer-market linkages by establishing a procurement and marketing system for onion, maize, and soybean. Market research, value chain studies, exposure tours, and buyer-seller meets will support farmers in understanding quality standards and pricing mechanisms, ultimately empowering them to negotiate better market outcomes.
- Access to Tools and Digital Infrastructure- To bridge the gap in farm mechanization and information access, Farmmax will provide shared tools such as onion seedling nursery machines, graders, and sizers. A dedicated mobile app will offer comprehensive digital services including registration, advisory, learning modules, on-farm planning, and market connections—creating a real-time support system for farmers.
- Farmer Engagement and Shareholder Development- The program will onboard 300 new shareholders each year, supported by field visits, advisory sessions, and awareness meetings. Parallelly, structured capacity-building sessions for the FPC’s Board of Directors will focus on governance, entrepreneurship, and planning to ensure strong institutional leadership.
- Farmer Facility Centre and Financial Support for Rabi Cultivation- A centralized Farmer Facility Centre will assist farmers in accessing government schemes, documentation, business planning, and dealer partnerships. In addition, Farmmax will provide financial support to 40 farmers to promote Rabi onion cultivation, strengthening off-season supply and improving price stability.
Conclusion
Farmmax presents a replicable and scalable model of agricultural transformation that blends grassroots mobilization with agri-tech solutions and institutional development. Through its holistic, community-driven strategy, Farmmax addresses structural issues in the onion value chain while building long-term resilience, stability, and sustainable livelihoods for farmers across India.
Important Note :
SAS is involved from defining the problem statement, evaluation of the research, aligning it with the present National policy its shortcomings. SAS then actively participates on designing the program, defining its outcomes, time lines, measurement matrix, the structure even to level of defining the care takers and implementers for this program with Manavlok and its team as its operational partners.
